Mosul University

     
 
 The first appearance of the university of Mosul was in 1959 when the college of Medicine began its first course in Mosul .Yet the official appearance of the university as a real educational establishment was on the 1st of April 1967 when University Law No. 14 issued to establish an Iraqi University under the name of the University of Mosul. During the past years ,the University expanded to include 20 colleges ,7 research centers ,6 consultant offices ,5 clinics and hospitals , 6 museums , and a number of artistic and administrative enterprises .
The University of Mosul tries to realize the aims of higher education in Iraq including preparing scientifically high qualified national staff in 100 specializations as well as supporting the movement of scientific research and serving society . As for staff preparing ,the university awards certificates in B. Sc. ,B.A, Professional & High Diploma , M. Sc. , M.A, and PH. D in 100 scientific specializations distributed on the departments of the University .
Today ,one of the most important monuments in Mosul is The hill of the Prophet Jonah " Peace be upon him "who was tested by God when swallowed by a whale for a period of time and then thrown on Tal At-Tauba "Repentance Hill" where he was covered with squash leaves and finally he went back to guide the people of Nineveh. Next to this hill lies Qouinjq hill under which lies the first and greatest library in history , the library of Assyrbanibal which was founded by the young Assyrian king Assyrbanibal who put more than 100 000 clayey tablet in this library . In the western bank of the Tigris there lies "Alhadbaa" the minaret of Alnouri mosque known also as Aljami' Al-Kabeer which was build in the era of Nourulddin AlZanki .Other famous mosques include An-Nabi Sheet"God bless him", An-Nabi Jarjes "God bless him " and the famous mosque of Ommiad ,known also by " Jami' Al-Musfi" which lies in a public area known as Alkawazeen which is famous of clayey works profession .in addition to a wide number of other well- known archeological remains such as the Atabic castle of "Bashtabya" and the nearby tomb of Yahya Al-Qasim and the remains of Qarasaray .To the south of Mosul , lies also the well-known city of alhadar which represents the gate to the western deserts of Iraq . Finally , there are also the remains of Namroud, Nineveh wall,Mosul Wall, and the remains of city gates. The history of Mosul is full of pioneers including the famous poet " Abu Tamam ", the historian Ibn Al-Atheer , Ibn Al-Shaar Almously ,and Ibn Jini.
The University continues in following its graduates after their employment in state establishments by providing courses of continuous education program aiming at refreshing the knowledge of its graduates .
As for supporting scientific researches ,the University imposes on its teaching staff a detailed research system to qualify them scientifically and to renew their knowledge as well as to submit new innovations . For serving the society , the University presents its services on different forms including field practices of its students and staff in different regions to present its services to families in different specializations . Since 1988 , the University has been evaluating these practices each summer . It also evaluates the competitions of creative arts for the University students in more than 30 genera in order to support the gifts of the University students. Another evaluation is conducted on the results of field survey of the schools of Nineveh governorate concerning oral and dental diseases . The University embarked on writing encyclopedias starting with the Cultural encyclopedia of Mosul in 5 parts and preparing for the issue of the cultural encyclopedia of Iraq in 20 parts.
