Mosul City

Mosul City is one of the Iraqi cities. It is deeply
rooted in history as one of the three oldest cities in the world . Many cultural
innovations and discoveries are attributed to Nineveh governorate which is
surrounded by Duhuk governorate from the north , Salahulddin governorate from
the south , Al-Ta'mim and Erbil governorates from the east ,and Syria from the
west ,so it lies between longitudes of 41, 25 and 44,15 east and latitudinal of
34 ,15 and 37,30 north .Nineveh is a yard of the Assyrian civilization in that
it includes the four capitals of Nineveh,kalih ,Nimrod, Khursubad ,and Assyria .
It is thought ,however , that there is another lost city called Al-Maghar (800
Ir.)which belongs to the middle Assyrian era as excavations indicate.
Total population of Nineveh is (2.174.372) persons according to 1997 census and
expected to amount ( 2.408.287) in 2007 distributed on an area of (37. 323 Km² .
It includes nine provinces. The city is penetrated by 214 km of Tigris river
beside the 47.5 km lake of Mosul Dam as well as the upper zab and Alkhazer which
has a tributary called Alkomal passing through the city .
The ruins of Nineveh which is surrounded by a wall along the eastern bank of
Tigris . It is believed that the name "Nineveh " has a connection with the
Goddess "Nena" (the Goddess of The fish or the Whale ) as well as with the
Prophet Jonah "peace be upon him" known also by the name of "Thonnoun " and his
famousstory with the Whale mentioned in the Glorious Qura'n .
Nineveh is surrounded completely by great walls (6.6km ) supported by a trench
from the east to form a trapezoid of a 12km circumference .Its northern side
(1-2km) includes three gates : "Add, Nirkal, Sin " ;whereas, its southern side
(800m) includes Assyria gate .
The eastern side (5km) includes six gates from south to north : Khelsy , Shamash
,NNlil, Mishlal, Shibaniba, and Khalaly. Finally
the western side (4.1km) along Tigris includes the following gates from north to
south : Almasqi,Mashki, Almasnat, Karry, Alsahra'a, Madbary, Alsilah,
Ekalmasharti, and Khandoury .
